Q: I have a hootoo 9-port 60 watts usb 3.0 hub. a 3.5 drives take about 10 watts so is there any other limiting factor, or is it just a toaster

Beware, 3.5" drives need +12v, whereas 2.5" only need 5v- so there is no way this can connect to 3.5" HDD's or DVD drives.

Q: Why is the HDD in the picture not the correct way to use it?

This is compatible with 2.5 inch drives only. the picture is a 3.5 inch drive so is NOT compatible, I presume it takes too much power to spin it up, I did try a 3.5 out of interest but it would not spin up although it was found as a removable drive with no media.

Q: How long is the cable?

The lead is 20 cm or 8 inches long overall including the plugs, the flexible lead is 10 cm or 4 inches long.

The one and only time I experienced the Blue Screen appearing on my laptop was after I had migrated the contents of my HDD to an SSD (a hard drive upgrade to improve my laptop's performance) via this adapter cable. That was because I left the cable and SSD attached when my laptop restarted. So I presume Windows got confused and couldn't identify the additional device (SSD) or would not permit an additional instance of Windows to be utilised by the same laptop, i.e. security purposes, etc. After I detached the adapter cable and SSD, then installed it in my laptop, Windows worked fine. I does not seem like you performed the same setup I did, so it may be down to the drive you are using. Worth checking to ensure you don't have any conflicting WIndows OS or system files. Alternatively, search the Internet, because I believe there is a way to switch the Drive causing any conflict. Possibly by locating the Computer Manager and editing the settings. I hope this is of use to you.
