Yes, these stuff sacks are washable. Hand washing and machine washing are both ok, but leach is not recommended.

Q: What's up with the thing that looks like a ocket inside but is sewn shut on all ends? What's the point?

That is a DUST FLAP. When you use these STUFF BAGS to put your SLEEPING BAG in when on a hiking or camping trip, the DUST FLAP keeps the DUST & DEBRIS out of the small opening left after you use the toggle to close the opening. Not all stuff bags have this DUST FLAP; it is actually a very useful added feature.

Yes, they are easy to carry. There is a handle on the bottom you can use as well as the zip line closure.
