I enjoyed the first book in this series and will continue to read the whole series since the books are easy to read and I enjoy the setting at the turn of the century.

It was fun to read and to feel like taking a step back in time. The characters were interesting and the twist was a good one.

First book in the gaslight series. A midwife and a police detective join together to solve a murder. This book was excellent and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Ich habe das englische E-Book gelesen, diese - mir bisher unbekannte - Autorin ist definitiv eine Neuentdeckung für mich.Der Roman, der eher ein Krimi als ein Thriller ist, erinnert mich in seiner Art sehr an die Romane von Anne Perry, die ich ebenfalls gern lese.Wie bei Anne Perry wird auch hier ein Verbrechen, bzw. eine Reihe von Verbrechen von einem Polizisten und einer Frau aus gutsituierten Verhältnissen, die nach einem Zerwürfnis mit ihrer Familie als Hebamme tätig ist, gemeinsam aufgeklärt, wobei die beiden sich gut ergänzen. Polizist Malloy kennt sich ganz gut in der Unterwelt und bei den Kleinkriminellen aus, Sarah Brandt dagegen kennt die Verhältnisse in der gesellschaftlichen Oberschicht und hat Zugang zu diesen Kreisen. Im Gegensatz zu Anne Perry geht es hier nicht um das viktorianische London, sondern um New York in den 1890ern, aber der Unterschied ist gar nicht so groß.Es hätte mir gefallen, wenn etwas mehr Medizingeschichte einbezogen worden wäre, leider wird über die Tätigkeit einer Hebamme im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert nicht viel berichtet. Der Kriminalfall ist gut aufgebaut, auch wenn er für mich früh durchschaubar war. Das ziemlich dramatische und nicht ganz glaubwürdige Ende setzt einen deftigen Spannungshöhepunkt nach der vorher eher ruhigen Erzählweise.Die größte Stärke dieses Romans ist sicherlich der gesellschaftskritische Aspekt: die Korruptheit der damaligen Polizeiorganisation, das Elend der armen New Yorker Bevölkerung und die Verlogenheit und Heuchelei derjenigen, die sich - zu Unrecht - für etwas Besseres halten.Ich vergebe vier Sterne und werde sicherlich noch weitere Bände dieser Reihe lesen.

This is a murder mystery that takes place during the late 1800s or Victorian time in New York City. If you like historical fictions this may be your cup of tea. The descriptions of the city with its sights and sound and smell is quite realistic and brings you back to a time when the police department was corrupt, the upper echelon of wealth was even more corrupt and powerful in the controlling of almost every aspect of society, including the police department. That is why when midwife Ms. Brandt discovered that a young, beautiful 16 year old girl was murdered under mysterious circumstances she ran into many road blocks and obstacles trying to investigate her murder with the help of a police sergeant Frank Malloy. During the investigation they uncover secrets of the well known family of the Van Damm and they also have to peruse through the underbelly of the underclass of New York City. We can also begin to understand the inequality of the sexes as we see that the roles of the women in society is seen as subservient to their male counterparts.The story of how Ms. Brandt and Sergeant Malloy investigate the mystery is fast moving and suspenseful as they each piece together the puzzle of the young Lizzie Van Damm's murder. However, the ending of the story is somewhat abrupt and shocking. That is why I gave it a 4 star.
