Q: does this work with mac?

As a power back up it will work with anything but its not 800 VA back up UPS unit and nothing like it. The rating given by the supplier of these imported units is the power that can be connected at one time not the amount of battery back up. Its misleading to describe it as an 800 VA back up unit, its a fraction of this.

Q: Does this unit beep during a power outage?

I haven't had an actual power outage since installing my UPS, but when testing and setting it up, it would beep when there was a load attached, but no power supply. In other words it beeped in a power outage.

Q: My computer uses a 450 watt psu, so i got the 1000 va. this should be plenty for this demand right? having some teething problems...

It's all about time- the greater the demand the shorter the time. I am sure BPC have recommended capacities.

Q: What load wattage can the 1500VA tolerate? I always thought w = va, but most of these seem about half that?

Mine managed a 1000w load for just under a hour.
