Great NAS out of the box
It's a great NAS out of the box but I upgraded it to 16gb of memory and added a 2tb nvme for caching. Works great as a plex server and hold the family photos. The QNAP store has many apps and there are plenty of videos on YouTube to help you set it up. NAS Compares is a great channel.

Best Hardware value on the block! Loads of options. VERY FLEXABLE!!!!! This Baby Rocks. 2022 Model
This was not my first NAS i upgraded from Synology 418play A 4 Bay NAS. I am not a professional but a retired golfer (patients is a virtue). 1st off, spend the extra $70 and get the 6 bay it's a no-brainer. There's a tons of U-Tube videos to get you started. Buy cheap m.2 SSD's for the m.2 slots, as the buss speed is X1 - 1000MB/s. HDD run at 250MB/s (4Xslower) The OS lets you configure almost everything your way, many many options - not a bad thing. I installed all apps (including PLEX) on one of the m.2 ssd 500GB and Qtiering works great as the OS system was installed on the same M.2 SSD. I had two old SSD's laying around from old computers one 240gb the other 250gb installed in Bay 5&6 configured as Raid 1 read/write HDD Caching for a 3 drive RAID5 on Bay 1,2,3. This baby is fast. No hiccups. caching hits are in the 70% range. Easily handles everything I throw at it. Setup is tedious to get it exactly the way you want it. but well worth it. Quality is top-notch.The not so good: Had trouble setting up Qumagie to work with two phones & two computers. Don't really know if it was me or if Qnap was having issues with their servers. I think they added another layer of security because during setup I had to login with my Qnap account AND my qnap user name and password, confusing at first.Everything works great now. All 4 devices now are in sync. I have 38000 photo's using 3,2,1 backup strategy. QuMagie is wonderful. One-touch copy backup/transfer is a gem done right. This function alone can-not be over stated. A god-sent for avid photographers. PLEX runs flawlessly. Photos, Music, 4K videos, and home movies run without issues on all devices. Accessing This NAS off-site is a breeze including all mobile apps. (note the one-time double login account setup requirements) our phone pics auto upload to the NAS and when I get home they auto-sync to my desktop master Photo directory ready for my edits....... Would I buy it again at seven hundred for a 6-bay, up-to-the-minute latest Intel hardware, you bet! The learning curve is steep but well worth the climb. That is if you want best-in-class.Oh by the way, You can double the MEM to 8GB Dual Chanel by adding just ONE 4GB MEM to the existing 4GB for ten dollars available on Amazon as Samsung 4GB DDR4 PC4-21300, 2666MHZ, 260 PIN SODIMM, 1.2V, CL 19. my MEM cache jumped to 3.12GB with 4.86 available. Seems to play very nice with the installed ADATA SODIMM.With all 20 apps and the system installed on a single M.2 Drive, requires just 75GB. And with the NAS running at near no load and 8GB of MEM installed it will leave about 5GB of MEM free for System use. So 8GB is a lot of MEM for home use. I've seen the QNAP use the extra MEM for internal system caching when needed.

Much better than I expected!!
I bought this to replace a DL380e Gen8 server that was acting as my Plex Server and also fulfilling several other roles. The server was in my garage and here in the south, during the summer, which makes for a very unhappy box. The fan noise was so loud that it was becoming bothersome. So... I thought I'd get a NAS that might be able to allow me to move my primary storage off and let me run my smaller server. I got a BONUS that the NAS was able to actually take on the role of the Plex Server for a lot less power consumption! This even handles multiple(at least 2) 4k streams simultaneously! Loaded this little guy up with drives, took a couple of days to copy my archives over, and now I just turn my servers on to use them for lab or backup. Absolutely GREAT!!!

All you can need in a headless/painless home NAS
Qnap may have security concerns over the last years, but those peoples who complains also forget that security is a shared responsability. How many times big tech companies got hacked? Security breaches are everywhere. No to blame specific for qnap and their past security concerns. In my case I has not have any problem so far with qnap, either security or data problem.Previous l'y I had a ts 230 and it did live for near 5 years. Until I decided to replace it (I still have it stored somewhere unused)This nas is for 2023 users in comparison to my previous one. It does have expansion capacity, more storage capable, cache with nvme, 2 nics.More than you can need for a regular users. In my case I also have it as a proxy cache and a plex server and it stores 1080 60fps movies without sneeze. My set-up is 1x raid10 with 16tb Seagate and 1x raid10 with 6tb ironwolf. The 10's is for permanent storage, the 0's is for data in transit (recent downloads like recent movies, etc...)1 nmve for os and apps, another for cache. The issue I have now is temperature. The cache disk goes too hot (around 60c) and the system stop use it for periods or change his behaviour from write cache to read cache. I use a firehawk 1tb and I do believe is nothing to do with the nas itself but the lack of proper heatsink plate in the nmve disk.I decide to give them 4 stars due to a support I request from Qnap and their were not so effective to attend it. It was related to cache managed and cli options. No much help from their side, attentive, not not helpful. So you rely on the current capabilities nothing more.If you're looking for some customisation, go for another solution. This is a plug and play one. Support may not be capable to help you.So far so good, 3 months without complains. Is silence yet powerful. If you're looking for a painless/no tech saavy nas, is the way to go. Many other would prefer go and build their nas with truenas, unraid among others. While I do also have unraid servers, this always involves more indeep knowledge. Any of those platforms are heartless or painless. Soon or later will require maintenance tasks and supervision from time to time. Not with this kind of nas solution.I will try to keep this post updated, however be advice, my previous one last for at least 5 years. So my update won't be any time soon.
