This works really well for ginger and wasabi but note that it is made of actual animal skin
My family has owned Japanese restaurants and although I have a desk job now, I grew up around the Japanese cuisine kitchen for my whole life. So let me say, I have never seen quite this board before to grate wasabi. It is true that nothing beats wasabi, and wasabi from Shizuoka is the best. This grater works really well to produce pure wasabi, and rubbing it circular like the instructions say, does produce a kind of ofamy wasabi that is drier than usual tube type or the type made from powder. Anyway, this tool would be a good gift for the home sushi, sashimi lover. But note that it is made from an actual animal, a type of ray, so probably not the best gift for a vegan or even vegetarian, lol. Leave it the Japanese to use the part of the animal you can't eat, and most people wouldn't eat. Anyway, I really like this but it is a little hard to store, you can't put it away wet, and the wood takes a bit to dry out. Then the rough surface makes it not play well with other tools in the drawer. I store mine with my sushi mats, onigiri forms, and tea service tools in a box in the closet. Then, it won't get damaged and won't be forgotten when we have sashimi or sushi.

Gave me a splinter
Was so excited about finding this Japanese Ginger/Wasabi Grater with cleaning brush but, unfortunately let down with quality of this product. The actual "grater" is a very thin glued on piece of grate paper(curious as to how long it will stay glued together after washing after use), attached to an unfinished piece of wood..a nightmare waiting to happen as far as splinters go. It did an ok job grating, but was awkward to hold. The cleaning brush bristles did a great job cleaning the grater, but are attached to a bit of unfinished wood, again a splinter concern. Although the package presentation is great, the product just isn't the quality I was expecting. The traditional metal plane grater is probably a better bet in my opinion. Longer lasting and no chance of splinters while using.

Elegant and practical grater
This ginger and wasabi grater is so nice I'd like to display it and not use it! But I also like ginger, so I am sure I'll put it to use. The grater arrived in a simple but attractive black box with Japanese lettering on the top. Inside were the grater and a bamboo brush meant to clean the grater after use. The grater has different lettering than that on the box. I'll have to ask a Japanese friend to translate for me.There is also a small card, written entirely in Japanese, although four illustrations depict how the grater is used. The grater -- and brush, I presume -- are hand made. The Amazon page for the item links to a video showing the making of the grater.I am often drawn to the Japanese aesthetic, even for functional items, and this grater is pleasing to both the eye and the hand. It is relatively expensive if one considers only its practical value; one can find much cheaper graters. But the artistic value is what makes it a worthy purchase.

Too small
This tool work well but it is too tiny . I bought it to crush garlic smooth for pasta.

Beautiful & Functional!
This grater comes in a beautiful box and would make an excellent gift for someone who loves to cook and appreciates functional artwork. This really is a small piece of artwork.I was skeptical about this at first but it soon proved to be as functional as it is pretty. It quickly produces a quantity of finely grated ginger or garlic. I want to try it with horseradish because it's similar to wasabi in flavor. It will be fun to play with it and see what else I can come up with. This also comes with a brush for easier cleanup. I wouldn't attempt to put this in a dishwasher or soak it in water. I clean immediately after use and just let it air dry and return it to it's box until next time.
