Easy Installation With Ubuntu Linux - Follow Epson's Linux Installation Guide
The refurbished Epson ET-2850 was well packaged with all of the needed components including generously full ink bottles. The Epson website has a DEB file to install the driver as well as a PDF of the user manual and a PDF of the Linux installation instructions. I much prefer that to manuals and CDs packaged with the printer. I used dpkg in the command line to install the DEB file driver and used the localhost address for CUPS in a web browser to install and configure the USB connected printer, following the simple directions on the Linux installation PDF. It was a very easy process that went off without a hitch. Printing and scanning work perfectly. No more than my wife prints, the large bottles of ink that were slightly more than enough to completely fill the four ink reservoirs will probably last for a couple of years of printing a few small items per week. This was the complete antithesis of our horrible experiences with an HP inkjet/scanner. The Epson is as good as the HP was bad. I recommend Linux, and I recommend Epson printers and scanners to use with Linux.

Just don't... Save your money and run!!!
If you aren't going to print at least once a week don't get this. I got it because I thought I would save on ink. Well, it was a $300 mistake so I certainly didn't save on anything!I printed some stuff and I had to go to the other room. When I came back, the paper was jammed the printing quality was terrible and one piece of paper was jammed and there was magenta SOAKING that piece! I have tried all of the suggestions short of deep cleaning but I am glad I didn't try that because low and behold, there's a "maintenance box" in the back that gets the excess ink and you need to make sure that's not full so there's no major ink overflow accidents.I am going to leave pictures of the one that came with my "renewed" printer. I have barely printed two dozen papers and when I unscrewed the panel and the box the cotton pad was already almost black. Not to mention the box that has Epson written on it but is missing the chip completely. I don't know if my model is supposed to use this box because certain models can't be replaced(?!) but... ¯\(°_o)/¯I was only ONE DAY OUT OF MY WARRANTY when it messed up so I am SOL.With all the other problems people have, save yourself some money and try something else. I can't seem to find a decent little printer for light jobs that aren't pieces of junk. I am so disappointed because I REALLY, REALLY needed to do some printing!

Problems and more work than expected but eventually got it working
So, I’m not sure if my experience was a byproduct of the Amazon renewed program or a general Epson printer issue, but after going through the set up routine, the printer would not initialize and gave an error. Calls to both, Epson and Amazon did not yield a solution. The error code indicated that something was stuck in the printer. This happened after it had already been filled with ink and was proceeding to the print head priming step in the setup. Following the onscreen troubleshooting prompts did not resolve the issue. Epson phone support was not able to resolve the problem. Amazon was not able to exchange the item because there was no more renewed inventory. With no other option, but a return for a refund I tried one last time to see if I could figure out why the printer was throwing an error. I manually turned the gears inside the printer until the printhead lock moved to the unlocked position and then slid the print head left and right in its track, then again, turned the gears until the printhead locked. After doing this I restarted the setup and this time the error cleared and the setup could be completed. However, I then had problems with the installation of the software on two PCs. I was able to resolve this each time by uninstalling all Epson software, then restarting the computer, then suspending my firewall and then doing a clean installation of the drivers. All Apple devices were able to find and natively print to the printer without any software installs. The printer itself seems fine. Printing is sharp and fast, but photos seem to be a little washed out. It could be that I could improve upon this through print settings, but haven’t tried yet since 99.9% of my printing is text and the images are good enough for my needs. So, minus 1 star for the setup challenges and meh image print quality.
