Q: Has anyone ever took this through in hand luggage for the plane? As I am thinking of purchasing for my son on the flight

Yes it was absolutely fine although unfortunately my daughter was able to dislodge parts which were a major choking hazard so we had to return. No issues at the airport though

Q: What ages is this for? The description says 1yr and above but then I also see elsewhere that it says 3yrs?

I personally think it depends on each individual child. Our son had his from 7 months old and still loves it now at 18 months old, but he's always been advanced for his age. I'd say some certain parts (such as the key) are sharp for the younger age range (put it in the lock and keep it turned so far so it doesn't come out to start with) but he's always been fine with it and never had any issues. If you sit and play together with it then it would be fine, but it's also a toy that can be put away for a little while and got back out again at a later date if it's 'too old' for the little one to start with. I'd say if your child likes playing with the suction spinner toys that you can stick to glass/freezer door etc then they'll show interest in this toy.
