Please be assured that it is safe. There could be a mild smell of paper pulp or natural fabric. Airing them out for a few days would do.

Q: Are these containers mouse proof?

Yes. The storage box is closed with a lid.

Q: How well do these clean? Especially the beige ones

I would use a vacuum to clean them. I bought the medium gray ones..
