Q: How do I attach this to a shepherds hook

Everything you need is provided - even a screwdriver! There is what they call a buckle which comes in 2 pieces. You place it around the pole and tighten it with screws. We needed the extra piece inside the buckle because our pole was smaller in diameter. It was good to have 2 people. Per the info from the manufacturer: Installation: First, tighten four screws to secure the buckle on the rod (fits for any 2/3 inch to 1-3/8 inches pole or shepherd hook). Make sure the buckle is placed high enough (at least 6 feet from the ground). Next, wrap the baffle around the buckle and press down the buttons on the side of the baffle to finish the assembly. Finally, ensure the squirrel deflector is 8 to 10 feet from the trunk of the tree (or any other platform.)

Although we've had a mild winter here in NE PA, I would see no reason to take it down. It's very well built.
