A riser is just an add-on base piece that goes under one part of the sensor, either the piece with the battery ot the smaller, magnet half, so as to line up properly and identify the door or window open or closrd,

Q: What kind of range do these have?

These are not range based. This is a sensor for a window or door that links to your system. If you are armed and it comes apart, the alarm will sound instantly!

Q: How can I safely remove the sensor?

Disable from your alarm system and then use a paper clip or thin butter knife to pop it off.
