Does anybody have experience using rechargeable batteries with the SM58 handset? How long do they last? Is this a good, viable alternative to alkaline

I have used rechargeables successfully for years. Depending on several factors, rechargeable may or may not a viable alternative for you.  There are a number of types of rechargeable batteries.  NiMH are the most common and probably what you will end up using.  They are what I use so the comments below apply to them.Lithium Ion is also a possibility, but they have more than twice the voltage, so they are not drop-in replacements for alkaline. I have not used them with microphones. You would have to check with Shure's engineering department to see if the SM58-X8 can use them.Rechargeables will not power the mic as long as alkaline. When they are new they will do OK. How long? That depends on the initial capacity of the battery.  In general, expect 1/2 to 2/3 as long as an alkaline. Unfortunately, the more times they are recharged the less time they will power the mic. Eventually, they will not last long enough to get you through an event/gig.  I get about a year using the mics once a week for a few hours.They will not work like you expect.  Alkalines give you some warning before they die.  Rechargeables give you none - the mic will go from working fine to not working at all very suddenly.Keep your batteries charged, but don't leave them in the charger!  Leaving your batteries in the discharged state makes them die faster, but leaving them in the charger after they are charged isn't good for them either.  If it's been three or four weeks since you last used them they will have self-discharged enough to make a difference - charge them up just before you need them. All chargers are not created equal.  A cheap charger will kill your batteries pretty quickly.  Buy a "smart" charger.  They aren't cheap, but will cost less in the long run because your batteries will live longer.Buy batteries made by a known manufacturer that have a good reputation.  Don't buy no-names or foreign batteries from the well know auction site.  You will be sorry.  They will not live as long and they will not have the claimed capacity.Keep a few fresh alkalines at hand for emergencies.  In a pinch they will make the difference between happy talent and an early retirement for the sound engineer.

What is the difference between a shure wireless sm58 & a pg58,& also beta 58

PG refers to the model number of a digital receiver for a wireless microphone. The SM 58 ensures tried and true dynamic vocal microphone technology, the beta 58 is the latest and greatest technology. More dynamic response range, and more volume sensitivityI have this unit with the beta 58, and it is awesome. I also have the model 31 wireless headset as well

Can this microphone be used with an analog sound system or only a digital system?
