Q: What does l- l+ r- r+ mean?

L is for the left speaker and R is for the right speaker.

Q: Will this work without an amp?

Yes a receiver or integrated amplifier you send your signal into it and you can hook up to 4 sets of speakers. Then you can isolate and listen to a set of speakers against another pair for comparison etc.

Yes, that is the whole point of this product - to allow one amplifier to drive several pairs of speakers, with independent volume control over each pair, and impedance protection to protect the amplifier.

You must have two connections on your amp for each of the left and right outputs, one positive, usually red, and one negative, usually black. These will connect to the corresponding left and right inputs of the speaker selector.
