No. The main cable must be cut.

Q: Can a 12 awg solid wire be inserted into the bigger hole?

The description for these connectors says that it will accept 12 gauge wire. we do not use anything bigger than 14 gauge so I don't know for sure.

Q: Can the connectors be reused if silicone added?

The gel isn't silicone. The connectors can be reopened but unless some dielectric gel squeezes out you risk the chance of water infiltration and thereby the integrity of the connector. I'd recommend discarding failed attempted connectors .. it's a guarantee that you'll mess-up the first few so get extras.
