Q: Is it heat resistant?

No. It warps when under my plate with an omelette. It DOES NOT provide any insulation from heat transferring to the table. The product does stand up to heat, in so far as it does not deteriorate.

Q: Is the surface completely smooth and firm enough to write on with a pen? Would the pen go through the mat?

The surface is smooth yes but not as firm as the mats I have used in the past, however I don't think the pen will go through it (though i have not tried it).

Q: Can we use on either side?

These placemats are just paper thin, I was disappointed , they was not what I thought it would be.
