it extends and retracts the hook that grabs the latch. it's very forgiving if you didn't exactly measure where you should set it

Q: What is the travel distance: measurement fully extended, measurement fully closed?

The total travel distance is approximately 7/32 of an inch. The actual maximum spring compression portion is only about 1/8 of an inch after which it is solid. The main issue that I ran into is the mounting holes for the latch are perpendicular to the latch and have no provision for adjustment while the hook mounting holes are parallel to the hook. Again no adjustment so you need to be fairly precise in your mounting process.
