Q: What is the battery life? Do they shut off automatically if left on or is there a timer setting?

The battery life last for about two days without charging however if the battery dies then the ball would not light up. It also charges very fast about 20 mins. I totally recommend it its an awesome light. You should definitely purchase it.

Q: Are the balls safe for the swimming pool?

yes they are water resistant, they have a rubber seal on the charging port. But as they are hard plastic, they are not for play.
