Q: Will it cut through soft copper sheeting?

It probably would but I don’t think it would make a clean hole. I suggest you use a metal hole saw.

Q: Does this work in a standard drill? I'm not using on stone just cutting a hole in heavy rubber

Not sure what you are defining as a standard drill. This hole saw worked in my cordless Porter Cable drill and my Rigid plug in drill. Hole saw worked great!
