A wallet size photo will fit and it has to be cut down a little bit.

Q: how to take off the plastic lid ?

If it is snapped together, there is a little hole that you can put a pin in & it will open up.

Q: If i removed the keyring would these work for Christmas tree ornaments? or would they look too much like I hung up a keychain?

I used them as Christmas tree ornaments. They looked just fine. I did some personalized with name & year with a small watercolor of holly on one side & a watercolor pic of Christmas things on the other. Everyone really liked them & kids were thrilled to hang their very own ornament.
