Q: ?right for boy age 8 and good at building

I think so, we got a bunch of these sets (because they are modular and can work together to build more complex stuff) for our 8, now 9 year old. He is an expert at Legos--building the 14-16 year old sets. He found this fun and it is still on the front of the toy shelf. T&K manuals are like mini-science books. They have been great to re-teach the mom too :)

Q: Seriously... gender - boy!?! really!? girls need to know about science and engineering, as well! the gender description should be removed!

Definitely for Girls, too! I’m with you there! Amazon needs to know that Electronic learning is not gender specific to Boys and needs to put the Electronic learning category under all genders!

Q: Does this set turn gears to make other sets parts move

There are 2 gears connected to a generator through a hand crank. There is a clear plastic cover over the gears so you can see how they mesh together as you turn the hand crank.

Q: Is this compatible with the Thames and Kosmos Electronics learning circuits series of kits as an alternative to the battery compartmentt?

I’m not sure. I didn’t purchase the circuits kit.
