Q: Im going through 2 rolls per month is this normal? I cant afford $70 a month, please advise, thanks in advance

2 rolls a month is not normal. It can be caused due to a multitude of issues. You could be running too high of a flow. What is your bioload in your tank? Do you run a protein skimmer? I would recommend looking up the Facebook page AskBRS. Lots of knowledgeable people to help diagnose issues with aquariums.

Q: What is the syringe for?

Nothing to do with the filter. Just a cheap extra for anything you might find to use it for.
