Q: Ok in not using a bias t. I'm powering through the usb plug. Hook up the dongle and the light goes out. What gives?

Depending on the exact setup, you may need to install a DC block between the SDR and SAWbird if NOT powering via bias tee. You can emulate this by putting a high quality capacitor in series with the signal line. Q: is this the same as the sawbird+goes?

No, it is a lower gain version, meant for installations that already have higher gain or benefit from lower gain (or have limitations on the available biastee current, and biastee is essential for the installation environment. For more information, please review the datasheets. Thanks!

SAWbird GOES is a self-contained LNA module designed for capturing beautiful weather images available from NOAA GOES satellites
Each module contains 2 ultra-low-noise LNAs (single package), sandwiched around a custom-designed, high-performance SAW filter centered at 1688MHz
SAWbird GOES can be powered in 3 ways: via bias tee, through the on-board microUSB connector, or through DC barrel connector with the included USB to DC connector adapter
Though compatible with most SDRs, we recommend using in conjunction with NESDR SMArTee XTR v2 (available on desertcart, item ID B06Y1GN5RP). For a higher gain, lower noise version, consider SAWbird+ GOES (available on desertcart, item ID B07GBFNV1H)
