Valuable Insight
I must say, though this book was written in the 1980's and is technically out of date, I find this book to be the most thorough and insightful one on writing and illustrating a children's book. I have been writing for years and have been published, and yet this book has shown me new ways to look at and evaluate my manuscripts. If you're serious about learning how to write and how the illustrations compliment the story, you must have this book in your collection. It's the best one available.

AWESOME BOOK!!! Learning WHY you draw is almost more important that HOW you draw!!! This will teach you!!
AWESOME book!! THANK you Uri for a terrific journey into the thought processes needed to do illustration correctly - THANK YOUNote for readers of this review - this is a learning book, be prepared to sit down and walk through the ideas slowly - so you can absorb them. It's NOT a book on how to draw, but a book on WHAT to draw. I am working on my own book, and changed my direction completely once I understood why you do the things you do in picture books!!

Go ahead. Buy it. This is it.
This is the best book on storytelling I have ever read. There is so much useful information and it’s very well explained with lots of examples. It’s now my favorite book on illustrating picture books.

Vintage Relevance
This is an awesome book & all of the positive reviews are accurate. I thought the last chapter can go. More current advise regarding self-publishing on the web & ebooks would be much better. I enjoyed the narrative of the author and appreciated his thoughtful approach to being real, connecting with your self and the reader. I really don't like the look of the book. All the drawings, sketches and examples of other artists work is sooooo old. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of the old masters but some fresh new current modern examples would be nice also, balance out the asethetic of the book. Every image seems to be from at least 100 years ago and has such an old world European look to it, no images that relate to our current world. Even the examples of Japanese wood cuts are from ages ago. Kitao Masayoshi was born in 1764. The most current reference I could spot was The Very Hungry Caterpillar and that was published in 1969. Perhaps this doesn't matter to others but I would like an updated version of this fabulous book, more relatable in a contemporary way. Self-publishing and ebooks should be imperative topics for any how to book in this field.

If you want to write, read this first!
Who ever thought writing for children would end up being so complicated! After looking for resources to guide me in my first effort, I found this book to be invaluable. Learning how to use pictures in a children's book is a tricky thing but this author made the process understandable and not overly time consuming. As I continue to write, I continue to use this book as a valuable resource.

I use this book as an Art Book as well. I love it.
This is one of the rare books that is very well written, easy to understand and fun to use. I use this book as an art book to practice drawing. I love it. In addition, there is a great deal of useful and solid information how to write and illustrate your own children's books. I would give this book six stars if I could.
