Can each eye piece be focused individually? Also, can it be focused (viewing with both eyes) on a surface 10 to 12 inches away?

Accepted Answer

No, each eye piece connects to the glasses and is set in one position.  You really can't use both eye pieces at the same time, you wouldn't be able to see well, these are designed for using with only one eye, not as reading glasses.  You focus by moving the item you are trying to view, NOT by moving the eyepiece.  So, depending on your own vision and the zoom you need, you would be able to see an item 10 - 12 inches away.  A low vision person is using these, he uses only one eyepiece and the other one he flips out and out of the way, he can read a newspaper at close distance (within 10 inches of the glasses).  I wanted a pair to use with crafts, but for me, determined that it would be hard to use - I would have to hold the craft item up to eye level to use, and what I want to do is have the item on a flat table, and found it was too uncomfortable, as the field of vision is too narrow for what I need.  Probably would work well for setting stones or for use with with small single items.  I will say for the money these are good magnifiers.  The low vision person no longer has to hold the magnifier in his hand!  Just don't try to use both eyepieces at the same time, you won't be able to focus on anything.  You might do better with a custom reader design that has 2 diff zoom levels in each lens.  Hope this answers your question.

I'm looking for the appropriate eyewear you would use for building models?

You need to find something that provides a long depth of focus!  The one I bought is such that, you must hold the thing you're looking at about four inches from your face, within a couple of inches one way or the other, which is awkward.  Also look for something LIGHT in weight.  I removed the left eye-piece to use separately, and now just use the right.  Especially since this unit does not offer separation adjustment so the odds of you getting stereo vision with it are not good.

As a locksmith, would this be a good tool for key impression?

Even at the weakest magnification, you have to hold whatever item you’re looking at about 2 inches from the lens. Not for long-term use. I use it for things like getting out a splinter, tying a knot in beading, something very short term.

Can you wear this with glasses?
