After a few washings, mine settled in at around mens 8.

Q: how high does it rise above the ankle?

My wife is 7 1/2 shoe size and they come up about 3-4 inches above her ankle.

Q: Are they crew cut socks and will be calf height of a men's size 10?

They are crew socks and would not cover the calf. Large enough for a size 8 in men’s. Cannot comment on a size 10. Amazon has an excellent return policy with no fuss. Made 4 returns over the holidays.
