Q: Can the straw be eliminated without causing the bottle to leak?

Yes it can. I remove the straw when I fill it with hot coffee and then only use the wide opening to chug or pour from. No leaks for me. Plus, working outside...my coffee stays hot throughout the day.

Q: Accidentally put it in the dishwasher. Can I still use it?

I have disassembled mine and put it through a wash cycle in the dishwasher several times with zero problems.

Q: I saw a video that showed water getting in the bottom of the bottle. Is that still a issue?

If by water "getting in the bottom of the bottle," you mean between the double wall stainless steel, that would mean that there was a crack in the metal, and this would be either an extremely rare manufacturing defect or due to the bottle being dropped from quite a distance. I have dropped mine a few times without any damage whatsoever. I have been using my BOTTLE BOTTLE Insulated Water Bottle 64 oz, every day for six months now and find that the only challenge is to make sure to disassemble the lid, seals and all, and run it through the dishwasher when it starts looking dirty or smelling a little bit, as mold or mildew will get under the seals eventually. Using the bottle brush and the straw brush regularly is highly recommended for regular maintenance. In my opinion, the BOTTLE BOTTLE Insulated Water Bottle 64 oz with Straw and Dual-use Lid Half Gallon Water Jug is an excellent deal.

I would take your bottle to an independent auto parts store, not a chain like autozone or advance, and ask them to match up a good o-ring for it. And ask if they might have one that is made of silicone, which is what the seals on this one are made of.
