Weights also tend to shift during fermentation making them ineffective. Experienced fermenters know that AIRLOCKS are needed to observe the release of oxygen bubbles, which reveals and confirms active fermentation. The Airlock releases and prevents re-entry of oxygen which causes mold in the fermentation.
