Three of the knives are self sharpening. There are also one serrated knife, 4 steak knives and a pair of scissors, none of which are self sharpening. The sharpener for the 3 knives is located at the bottom of their storage slots. The knives get sharpened every time you put them in or take them out of the storage slots. You can't actually see the sharpeners but you can hear them as the blades pass through them. I feel pretty confident they will stay sharp for the long haul because I bought a pair of scissors similarly equipped in the late 70's or early 80's and they're still the best scissors in the house w/o my ever having done anything but take them in and out of the plastic case they came in. Also space-saving cutlery block really is smaller than my old one and takes up significantly less space on the counter top. I would buy this product again or buy it as a gift for someone who needs a cutlery set.

All the knives come sharp, and the self-sharpening block does the job while offering serious convenience factor. Each of the knives, in conjunction with the block, stay sharp, are easy to handle, and so far have been durable. I did purchase a nakiri knife in addition but the set on its own is versatile enough for most buyers looking in this price range.

Es muy notorio la buena calidad de los cuchillos y hasta ahora me han funcionado muy bien, lo que no me gusto es que la base esta hecha para un cuchillo extra que se vende por separado lo cual te da el sentimiento que tu kit esta incompleto siendo que no es un producto economico

We have a full set of Calphalon pots/pans, so decided to try a set of their knives to match. You know.... guys like to have stuff match. ;-) Very nicely made, love that the tang seems to be fully integrated into the handle in a way that they'll never fail, or get loose. Having the type of knife shown on the end of the tang probably wouldn't be needed by a chef, but it sure is handy in our kitchen. Surprised the wive with these, and she absolutely loves them. They say the most dangerous knife in a kitchen is a dull one, and my that standard, these are some damn safe knives. Very sharp, and the built in sharpener is a relatively genius idea. Even the block seems to be very well thought out and constructed. I think we'll have this set for a LONG time. Well done Calphalon.
