Elmiron is the only FDA approved oral medication for interstitial cystitis. Unfortunately, research by the Emory Eye Institute and other research teams has now associated its use with pigmentary maculopathy, a retinal disease that could lead to blindness. Elmiron acts by coating the bladder wall. Chondroitin sulfate, one of the key ingredients in CystoMend, has been used in several bladder instillations/treatments (Uracyst, IaLuril) for IC/BPS in Canada and Europe, where it is believed to provide a protective coating of the bladder wall. Thus, they appear to have similar methods of action but no direct comparison/research has been done that compares Elmiron with any of the bladder centric chondroitin supplements.
