Maybe it's age, but I tried using a stick, my finger to test the dryness of the soil. I found I couldn't tell. I got away for years with just having a scheduled watering day, with an occasional extra watering for my more thirsty plants. I could tell wet from dry back then. But I've been out of the hobby for a while and am starting to rebuild my plant collection (back then I had close to 100 plants - 97 to be exact) But now, I found they always all seemed dry. I gave up and ordered this meter. What a plant saver! Not to mention it took the stress and worry out of caring for my new babies - especially the ones that don't like to dry out. More than worth the money. Why trust a stick or your finger?
