Q: Does anyone know if they can be placed horizontally, on their side? Will it affect performance?

Certainly you could try that. It might accentuate any resonances in the cabinet since more cabinet surface would be in contact with the shelf it's on. One thing to note about these great (not so) little speakers is that what they sit on and how they are placed does make a difference. Ideally they should be upright on solid metal stands 1-2 feet from a wall and pointed in a little to focus their sound toward your listening chair/position. Jamming them sideways into a cramped space will not help their sound but if they are already jammed in somewhere it probably won't degrade it much further.

Q: I just purchased these but I am new to audio equipment and wondering if I need speaker wire or speaker cables to connect these to the amplifier?

Yes you need wires; they are not wifi or blutooth enabled. you can get some good 12 gauge two stranded wire (Monoprice is one brand) and buy some Banana Plug endings (called terminations); get a wire stripper (inexpensive device) and go to town. Or you can spend a lot more bucks and get some fancy already terminated wire from companies that play upon the insecurities of equipment obsessed audio enthusiasts.
