Another enjoyable Lende read
Although a bit less humorous and light-hearted than some of her previous books, Lende captures another aspect of SE Alaska life- local government. She could have titled it “ No good deed goes unpunished.”Thanks again, Heather. When is your next one?

All politics is local
This was my first introduction to the author. As someone who works in campaigning, is passionate about local politics, and lives in a small town (though nowhere near rural AK small!) I felt called to this book. Each chapter is a reminder that we are all neighbors and a community first, and even through disagreements, love of home mostly drives our passion. I wanted to hear more about rural Alaska and have been inspired to seek out other books by the author, especially since it was such an easy read and there was an enjoyable flow to her writing. How exciting that she was part of the women’s wave into office! And that she was inspired enough to share her experiences with us. While I wouldn’t say you have to put this book at the top of your TBR immediately, I think you’ll be satisfied when you do crack it open. My only complaint is that there are a few times she assumes the reader knows more about her - or can extrapolate more about her personality - than I had as a first time reader. It didn’t leave me feeling like I was missing anything, just got annoying after a bit.

Small Town Politics can be as nasty as National politics, and a lot more personal
Having read her book about writing obituaries for the local paper, I was curious to read this book. It turns out to be a recitation of her frustrations with local politics once she was elected to the town council. It took her two years to figure out how it all worked. I used the past tense there, because she decided to not run for office again after finally figuring out how to accomplish her goals- her reasons for running in the first place. Much of the book goes into her dented feelings when a member of the opposition- who is usually considered a friend- used her for a public opinion verbal punching bag. I was glad when the book ended.

beautifully written
I've enjoyed all of Heather's books and had been really looking forward to this one. I can't say I 'enjoyed' it because her emotional duress during her time in small-town office and subsequent recall attempt was palpable and heavy - however (as always) she writes from a place of honest self reflection, candor and grace. Grace for her neighbors and community but perhaps most importantly, grace for herself.

Interesting, remote small town
The book is enjoyable as it tells of the ups and downs of being on a town council in a small town where friends may become adversaries when it comes to certain issues that affect residents and tourists alike. I have visited Haines, AK so it brought back good memories although I had no idea what made the town actually tick. For those who like small towns and reading about the "big" problems they have to solve, you would enjoy it. Heather is a good writer and injects humor and wisdom into her story.
