Almost all pop ups are 1/2", Rotors like the 5004-PC and PGP are 3/4", that's because they require additional flow. If you have 3/4" pipe, simple utilize a 3/4 in. x 1/2 in. Schedule 40 PVC Reducer Bushing.

Some like the 1806 have a “plug” on the main tube body. What is this for?

It's called an " SI " or side inlet, it's so you don't need to dig so deep when piping the 1806. Most sprays on the market are 4” and the 4” spray has a total body length of about 6”. That’s the standard for the most common spray body. However the 6” spray is the 2nd most common size and it has a total body size of roughly 9.5”- By utilizing the side inlet on the 6” spray body you wouldn’t need to trench any deeper than you would when installing a 4” making your installation easier by giving you more options. You my pipe from the bottom or side inlet, it’s your choice.

Is the sleeve 12 inches and the pop up another 12 inches?

Yes it does, or at least very close to that.
