Q: How does the 'spring assist' work? I'd assumed that you'd first need to tension the spring, like winding a clock, but apparently not. Thanks.

You remove the foil from the wine bottle and insert the next in the device. Then you slowly turn the "ears" clockwise. The spring inside the cylinder moves upward and removes the cork. Then you remove the wine bottle from the cylinder and continue turning - the cylinder itself grasps the cork and twists it back off the spring until the cork drops into your hand. I have purchased 3 of these (1 for home, 1 for travel, and 1 for our sailboat). 1 of the 3 couldn't handle a very firm synthetic cork and the spring just fell out of the cylinder - but when I contacted the seller they sent me a brand-new one and didn't even require me to send them back the damaged item. The item is sturdy and fairly heavy, but it does a good job with little effort. I would recommend it.
