this is garbage
I have bought TCL TVs 6 Times and they all all great. But the prob I have this time is I bought a SMART TV. If no internet can't set it up. I spent 3 days without the internet and tried everything I could think of to set up the TV and everything failed. once I got the internet and got the TV set up it was a joke. the remote is in another time zone the delay between the remote and the TV is 3 feet and it seems like 3 states away lag. On some of the channels the voice is like a Japanese movie, you see the mouth move and then the words come after. this is the worst TV I have ever bought and the voice command HA HA HA I have an ALEXA and it has trouble understanding sometimes but this TV can't understand anything pitcher quality is poor sound is like an AM radio. DON'T buy. I was waiting for my old TCL to die 15 years later and bought this one thinking it would be a better TV WRONG! they are going downhill in quality. Not sorry for the bad review. should have opened the box and made sure the TV was what I wanted and worked the way I wanted. I will do this in the future...

Great TV for content without cable subscription
This is a nice, cheap TV that doesn’t require a cable box or cable subscription to watch plenty of content. It will help if you already have a subscription to a service like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime (which comes with Prime Video), Disney+, ESPN+, Paramount+, Peacock or anything else. But there is a good selection of free offerings as well. Pluto TV has lots of random free channels and just airs ads, like normal TV, and I've watched it quite a bit. There are other similar free services I haven’t tried, like Vudu (for movies), Crackle (TV and movies), and Xumo (movies and TV) that should work. And then you always have access to everything on YouTube. But if you are not using traditional cable service, then this TV is only going to be as good as the internet connection you provide, since all this content is streamed. You can connect it to wifi, but this TV has an ethernet port, so I plugged a line directly from my modem to the TV, which gives me a stable connection and nice picture quality. When I tried to use wifi, I did get buffering, so unless you have pretty good wifi speeds, use an ethernet cable. The sound quality is good, and there are the necessary ports if you wanted to add a sound bar or some other audio device. Picture quality is decent enough as well. This is not a pristine HD TV, but you should've expected that from the price. My TV arrived with one dead pixel toward the top of the screen, but for me that wasn’t a deal breaker. As far as usability, if you already own an Android phone then you’re probably familiar with how everything works. This is basically a modified version of the Android operating system designed for a TV. To get apps, whether it’s Netflix or Pluto TV, you go to the Google app store and download them there. Any app you can download and use with your phone to watch stuff will probably be available for this TV. If you aren't good with modern technology and smart phones, you may struggle to use this TV - I've been an Android phone user for years. The remote is a minimalistic design, so there are no dedicated rewind/FF buttons or “back” buttons, etc. Like you would with your cell phone, you just intuitively figure out whether the back arrow will rewind when you’re in a show or take you back when you’re in a menu, etc. (I saw someone in another review complain that the TV didn’t come with a remote - mine came with a remote, two new batteries, a power cable, and an A/V adapter cable.) Again, some people who aren't used to modern user interfaces for phone apps and that sort of thing might find the remote confusing at times. Overall, I think this is a useful TV for less than $200. For the room I wanted to put this TV in, the monthly cost for another box from my cable company would’ve been exorbitant. Watching the streaming services I already subscribe to on this TV is a better idea to me.

unbeatable price
I like that it was very easy to set up and is very light weight. for $150 its an amazing little TV. The aspects of the TV that i'm not a fan of are the following. It is very slow to respond. If you aren't patient you are going to lock it up with continous button mashing. I'm also dispointed with the internal memory size. I'm not sure how much it comes with but there isn't enough space on it for the very first firmware update i've come up against. Looks like i'm going to need to add an external USB drive to maintain updates. The picture quality is fine for normal TV viewing but i'm not sure how it would hold up with an action scene in a movie. I mostly just use it to watch the news in the morning and put on the occasional Hulu show. It's in the bedroom where I hardly watch tv.

Great TV, read below to get some tips for the set up
This TV delivered everything it promised, the picture quality was better than I expected with 720p, I do wish TCL offered it with 1080p. The sound was robust. I wanted a 32" TV that could fit in the guest room and I wanted a Google TV for the voice function, I found just two TVs that fit the bill -Sony and TCL. Both came with 720p and Sony's cost is about 3X of TCL's. The two TVs had similar review rankings, I don't see spending 3X to get a 720p TV, TCL was the obvious choice. I'm glad I picked TCL. Setting it up was easy but not before I made a few phone calls to their support line. Phone calls were always answered within a few minutes wait time. I'm sharing some set up details that may help others. 1. This TV's WiFi only works on 2GHz, if you try to connect it to 5GHz, the set up will go into a connecting loop. 2. Test Google Assistant as soon as you have it working, don't bother setting up your streaming accounts yet. If the voice activation doesn't work and you know your remote is paired with the TV, the quickest thing to fix it is to perform factory reset by navigating to Settings -> More Settings -> Device Preferences -> Reset. After this, you have to set up your TV's connection again, this only took me a few minutes. 3. To set up closed captions, you need to go to Accessibility in Device Preferences to turn it on. Then each streaming APP needs to allow it, some may not have the function. You still need to turn it on with each streaming channel - press OK will also display the channel's menu/functions while pausing, navigate to CC if the function is there. 4. There are a few basic functions on the remote that are not explained. Use OK to pause and restart, use the arrows to rewind and forward, click the Google Assistant to speak, no need to hold it and no need to say "ok Google." That's all I can think of.

Terribly Weak on Many Fronts
I was in need of a 40 inch TV to fit a space in my home. I needed network capabilities as I use streaming services. And I want a clean and intuitive interface to allow anyone in the family to operate the television. I soon found out that you cannot find many options in the 40 inch size. And I could not fit anything more than a 40 inch diagonal. Reviews appeared positive for the TCL. So despite having no familiarity with the brand, I thought I would try it. First, the WiFi is a very antiquated 802.11n so bandwidth is limited, even with a strong signal (140 - 170 MB/s). WiFi performance has been extremely disappointing (40 - 80 MB/s) And I had a 49 inch Samsung in use prior to redecorating, and that set had flawless WiFi. So I attached a CAT6 cable (although I was sure the set did not have GB Ethernet). But it seems that Ethernet must be 10 Base-T, as I was seeing only 16 - 18 MB/s. That is 1980/90s technology! I find the interface to be lacking in features and flexibility. And since the processing power is weak, working through menu after menu to move between streaming channels can be frustrating. YouYube TV may be a demanding app. And it's performance is abysmal on this TCL. The app takes forever to load, and occasionally it crashes at first. Then video playback freases, buffered, and even may crash. Other streaming services are not so impacted. Although there have been a few video issues. I attached my Roku Streaming Stick, and most issues are gone, but one. I now get lags in starting Roku. The HDMI 2 does not wake up fast enough to recognize the connected Roku right away. And on many occasions Roku would not load because it could not detect HDCP on HDMI port 2. Are you kidding me!? Why can't there be a modern top end 40 inch TV? I have been struggling to get a reliable streaming experience from the limited technology of this TV. Cord cutting made painful. Out of the box, the processor barely performs well enough to stream. YouTube TV freezes, buffers and crashes repeatedly. My WiFi signal is strong, albeit only 150-175 Mbps. But Netflix reports that this Wireless-n is connecting at only 70-80 Mbps. Connecting to my CAT6 Ethernet is a dismal 15-20 Mbps (10-Base-T, seriously?). Roku Streaming Stick+ can run circles around the TV, but I have to use the HDMI-1 ARC for my sound bar (internal speakers are terrible), and HDMI-2 signal is repeatedly blocked by Roku for not supporting a HDCP signal. What have I purchased?

Awesome Television
This is a beautiful television. It's actually the second one I've purchased. The picture quality is amazing. The same with the sound quality I'd never need a sound bar. My first one was bought about five years ago. It was a wonderful television until my son who happens to be disabled turned in on and off like a million times in one minute. That television bugged out for a few days. I did everything even contacted TCL directly and the situation couldn't be remedied . Thank GOD I had purchased the insurance. Amazon credited me and I was able to get another one but bigger for just a few dollars more. When the new one arrived the first one stopped bugging and I put it in my son's room and it was great for about a year. I just got this 40" for my son's room because this brand of television is the only one I love. It's excellent! It's an Android television and it runs very smoothly I recommend this brand to everyone I can. The preinstalled apps are excellent no need for a fire stick. The quality is so excellent that the price is a steal. I plan to buy one more for my dining room.
