It was a very enjoyable book because it had lots of describing words and similes. It took us back in time and gripped us with his historical tale. We loved the characters, but our favourite would have to be Magnus. It shocked us to discover that Magnus was actually a real person!!! It sent shivers down our spine at the end. We are just about to read another novel by Tony Bradman - Viking Boy!!! Review: My 7 year old cannot wait to pick up this book & read some more. It is a full blown adventure story with a brave teenage boy as its hero. The topic fits in with what they’re doing at school, as it’s fiction but full of historical detail about the kind of rough, sometimes brutal lives of the time. It also has heart-warming human relationships & intrigue which keeps you wondering who exactly is loyal. Thoroughly recommended.

Fantastic book! I’m using this as a whole class text with my Year 5s and they love the story. A bit graphic at parts but that’s probably why they enjoy it so much!

Bought this for Year 6 children- a number of the boys read it and I read it too. It starts with the Battle of Hastings so there was never going to be any surprise ending- the children all knew their history too- but obviously the story was how that came about. I thought it was very well written with engaging characters and, for me, a surprise amount of death by bladed instruments- maybe not dwelt on in detail but certainly mentioned in passing. This was not off-putting and I liked all the historical details giving a flavour of a privileged Anglo Saxon life.
