Q: What is the bypass, and why would you need it?

What they call “bypass” is the way the valves work. It’s like a bicycle pump, when you push down the valve closes and you can apply pressure. On the return stroke, or when you pull back the valve opens or bypasses and the pump pulls back without any pressure. With this type of arrangement there is no need for an accumulator tank or to have the reservoir tank above the pump. It’s a simple pump, runs with only a reservoir. Don’t use it with an accumulator or pressure tank. Hope this helps.

Q: i am wondering if it is weather (rain) resistant?

My FloJet Pump is located in my boat in a enclosed hatch working the wash down sprayer and flip the switch then it operates my live well. I would think it would work outside in the elements unprotected, not very long, but if you built a small cover out of starboard to cover over the pump, it would last a very long time. Home Depot sells small pieces of King Starboard 24" x 48" for under $50, it's easy to work with like 3/8 plywood and it holds up against the outside elements excellent. Good Luck
