Yes, it can be used to trace car and home power wire, but it needs to disconnect the power to the wire to be checked and remove all the load from the wire. Of course using it on non live powered wires.

Q: how do you use the short circuit wire tracker?

You attach the red alligator clip to the car battery positive post. You attach the black alligator clip to the wire you want to trace. hold the wand (transmitter) tip as close to the wire as you can get. Move the wand along the wire while you listen to the receiver's tone (or static). Continuously adjust the sensitivity as you move the receiver tip along the wire. It takes practice to get the sensitivity set at the right amount. You may need to open the wire bundle to get the receiver probe tip close enough to the wire you are tracing.
