The book offers great insight in the often mystified world of HFT. This includes its origins and technologies as well as the actual strategies and exploits the trading is based. I also found it had a great flow throughout the entire book and struggled to put it down.

The history of ultrafast trading is covered in detail, and Mackenzie manages to tell the story and discuss the technologies without the sociology becoming a barrier to readers unfamiliar with the sociological theory. The book is particularly strong on the materiality of trading; rather than consider the technology as a black box making near instantaneous trading across distances possible, it unpacks the history of all the stuff it is built on: the computer hardware, the software, the networks, the fibre and the radio links.
