I don't know if it's gluten free but it's not for consumption. It's a squishy outer shell with a different color goo inside. As you squish pressure on the ball, the goo presses against the shell and the color appears through. They're pretty cool but not as durable as I'd hoped. One child popped theirs within 10 minutes of use. Another popped after a couple months of use only 1-2 days a week during special classes. The third is hardly ever used do it's still intact. That'd being said, if you're concerned with the contents coming in contact with skin, this might not be right for you. When they popped, however, no irritation occured to either child's skin.

I would not recommend washing them in a machine. They burst very easily.
