Yes it is okay for a 2nd grader. However it is not the best option. i recommend J world New York Sunrise, J world New York Sunny, or J world New York lollipop. Those are smaller than Sundance model so it will be better size for low grader

I'm not sure about the weight. I alao have a small 4th grader using this since the school started. So far it's holding up well. Btw it's always full of books, i'm quite sure I'm getting my money's worth.
