Hi Sara Z. Exactly, this is the function. Split the audio and video signal from the HDMI cable. I use it to connect a nintendo switch that does not have an optical audio output to a 5.1 sound bar, 1 signal comes in through hdmi and comes out in 2, video by hdmi and audio by optical audio. In my use of the product - audio and video travel on HDMI. The extractor removes audio from a 3.5 output and sends it to an audio input. There should be no reason the audio should not extract from streaming devices to feed other inputs.
