Q: will this work on a Vermont casting blower?

I am not aware what Vermont Casting is. This switch has a black /white lead. It controls the speed of the fan, if the fan you are trying to repair has positive and negative lead then it should work.

Q: Can I use it for a ceiling fan? But I need a plate to mount it in a wall switch box?

Yes you can use it for a fan control Lowe’s has what you need to Mount in a wall switch plate !!

I would say no. It's like a dimmer switch for lights. It bleeds off power to slow the motor speed

I couldn’t tell you if it will work for you in your application or not. All I can tell you that I replaced my old one with this one and it would turn on and off, no variable speed and it only lasted about 3 weeks and quit working altogether. Maybe it was a defective part.
