Using Windows Storage Spaces you can setup raid like functionality.

Q: Can it be left turn on for long period of time?

I never turn mine off. The drives sleep after a few minutes of inactivity. It is otherwise completely quiet. Depends upon your setup.

the 500u3 uses USB3 connection. The 500c3 uses the USB-typeC connection.
