Saw this by accident, looks useful for fixing many items, but how does one use it...? Can't tell from image.

YES. This works like a sewing machine in that one thread is on one side, and another (really the same one, but it is used like a different thread) is on the other side. The needle is first pushed through, then the thread pulled out. Then the awl pulled back down and out the other side; now having thread on 2 sides of the work. Move over one stitch and pushed out to opposite side (Now 2 threads on same side). The loose thread on that side is inserted over the loop and back under for a locking stitch.Then for dangerous use such as climbing and safety gear, one can tie a square knot every stitch, or every several stitches, or simply twist the loose end around the loop 3x to prevent the stitches from running if one stitch gets cut. The thin thread is 45 pound tensile strength & the heavier thread is 55 pound tensile strength. COOL TOOL! can I use any thread or do I have to use waxed thread?

Any thread works, but for heavy materials there is a lot of pressure / tension on the thread. Wax on the thread acts as a lubricant to help the needle traverse through the material. The thread is polyester, which has less stretch than nylon; 45 pound (thin) or 55 pound (heavy) thread.

What size needle is included with this? A number 2? A number 4? A number 8?

Purchase this to repair a tear in a caravan awning. The awl is fantastic and has save me a load of money in having to send the awning away for repair. It works like a charm and is very simple to use, providing strong stitches that will last a long time. Amazing simplicity at its best. Please note the standard needle and thread are a little on the thick side so I would suggest purchasing the additional thin needle and thread for thinner fabrics and lighter work such as tents etc. Awesome product and well worth the money.
