Backlight ? unless i am doing something wrong, there is no display backlight ! can barely see outside in shade. why not ?

I agree completely. If vendors want to use reverse displays, then there needs to be a way to invert it back to normal. This otherwise great meter is nearly USELESS outdoors... Take a 5 star meter to 2.5 stars since it only works in 1/2 the places I would need it. Very disappointing...

Will this thing really measure up to 1000 DC amps with the clamps? I need it for automotive use.

Yes it will I have one of these, but it has a + - on it , These meters will do as good as any meter Ive used this day and time, but the best Amprobes for high amperage AC and DC is the old analog clamp on type amprobs I have a set of them I have used for many years, I use this one cause it has a viriety of options on it Ohms volts amps ect, the Amprobes just do amps,,I keep this meter in my shack as my go to meter,,
