One of my Greatest purchases and finds
This is exactly what anyone looking to learn Logic would be looking for. Isaac Watts studied many of the great men of his time & as you may know was a Puritan and devout Christ follower. This is a thick read and you will find yourself re-reading parts of the book as it causes you to put effort towards your thinking. There are terms you will need to learn in the beginning in order to understand Logic but trust me it is worth it.The level of clarity he speaks separates this book from many others, my personal favorite is his practical examples he uses. Many times he will teach you one thing hard to grasp, but the example brings much clarity. I am now buying his addition to this book “improvement of the mind” (soli de gloria version). This should be taught at a young age, it’s greatly missed in today’s education. Now we teach lists of facts and details which is good, but we have left out the principles and rules to pursuing truth or facts. So it’s easy to see why our next generations are determined that whatever they are told, they believe it to the core. We are missing the ability to establish the why and where truth is founded.**Later Added** I would also recommend anyone looking to go further in Logic to buy the book on Logic by Lionel Ruby! actually was led there by someone in these comments and couldn't have appreciated there lead more, it also is written by a Christian

Great for Alternative Schools
When you use this with the ArtofLogic.Org seminar, in conjunction with literature, sociological observations, and much more, you can make a real difference with at risk children. Isaac Watts is clear in his definitions, his approach, and his method of uplifting children. When I received this, I was desperate to get something that will work since Robert Marzano does NOT work with the population I teach. I am now using the method of Augustine, Cornelius Van Til, and Isaac Watts. The ice of the pain that they all feel from their environment is melting away and their behavior is improving. Just the small suggestions from the three theorists have worked more than the idiocy in the secular theorists.

How the times have changed!
It is hard to believe that this was the standard textbook used in primary schools. Have we really become that "dumbed" down that this book seems more appropriate for a university level course? I am sure that as secularism took over the school system this book and course were forced out. If logic, like in the book, were still taught in the school system the average atheists would not even have a platform. His fallacy laden arguments would be easily exposed and corrected by school age children. The book explains concepts and gives definitions to help the reader better understand logic. I love the simple examples, and often biblical ones, that the author uses to illustrate his points. Some of the language may be a little outdated as words change meaning over time. There were parts that were a little dry, but overall a good read. The book closes with practical advice for those engaging in debate. My favourite quote from the book, and argument used against the skeptic/agnostic is:"Whatsoever is dictated to us by God Himself, or by men who are divinely inspired, must be believed with full assurance. Reason demands us to believe whatsoever divine revelation dictates; for God is perfectly wise, and cannot be deceived; He is faithful and good, and will not deceive His creatures; and when reason has found out the certain marks or credentials of divine testimony to belong to any proposition, there remains no farther inquiry to be made, but only to find out the true sense and meaning of that which God has revealed, for reason itself demands the belief of it."

At 75 years young, I am enjoying the challenge of learning to think logically, I admit it's quite a task but very exciting! Isaac Watts was Blessed!

Best school logic text ever written. But not for the foolish.
This book was required for 200 years at Oxford, Harvard, and Yale. Then the illogical of evolution entered, ....perhaps when Darwin wrote his friend, "my book killed god."....something switched in the faculty minds.

a classic
There was a reason this book was required reading in prestigious universities for decades. In particular, it spends a fair amount of time teaching how to look at information critically, discerning what is plausible from what is not.

Logic / Reasoning - Do you care?
The Title, and hence the subject matter, is of great interest to me. This book gives a basic introduction to the importance of the functions of the mind in every aspect of our lives-something I could have greatly benefited from earlier in my life. The art and science of learning how to improve and apply our reasoning powers is carefully explained and described in this book. It is sufficiently challenging reading for me and yet its 350 pages offer a wealth of knowledge without becoming overwhelming.(The purchase of this book was to replace one that was loaned out and not yet returned). This book would be invaluable to all who love the search for , and pursuit of, knowledge and truth - combined with the desire to improve ones' mental acumen in regards to becoming a 'wordsmith' so as to intelligently and respectfully articulate themselves to others.
