My teen daughter is regularly experimenting with her hair color. She was also blessed with a gorgeous head of hair- tresses that only a mythical goddess-would posess! Her hair is somewhat fine, she just has a ton of it! She has to be cautious of breakage, which can occur easily with over processing or not using the right combination of products. Her hair style is mid back in length with minimal layers- Any change in color requires 2-3 times the average product quantities. (For example: If buying a boxed kit, her hair could require up to 3 kits just to cover all of her hair once). Making the salon far too expensive. So, buying the individual products from Sally's made the best financial sense. It's even easier now for me to order their products through Amazon (open 24hrs online, I don't have to leave my house and often products arrive sooner than ordering directly from Sally's website). I try to keep "back up supplies" of developer and toners. Especially for the occasional "fail" that needs correcting. This developer is my "go to" and is just a great, affordable product. (I keep both level 20 and 30 on hand). (Be sure to confirm which level developer you need to work properly with your other coloring products. This helps to avoid breakage, over/under processing and you're more likely to achieve the outcome you are looking for). My daughter used this developer along with both "Blue's" powdered hair lightener/bleach and corresponding toner. She was able to go from a VERY dark brown with BRIGHT auburn red tones to a platinum blonde. It was accomplished in 2 complete lightening processes, then applied the appropriate toner. She still had some orange and yellow tones that wasn't totally corrected with the toner. So, I also purchased "No Yellow" purple shampoo by Nuspa* which is hands down one of the best hair products that we've ever used! We'll worth the money and it completed her transition to platinum blonde. Beautifully. After leaving the shampoo in for 3 to 5 minutes, all traces of yellows and oranges were gone! I'll never buy a different purple shampoo again. *note: I'm not sure if Sally's sells this exact purple shampoo product or not, but I did purchase it on Amazon and received it the same day.

I've tried others, but I like the thickness of this brand compared to others. It blends very well with your choice of pigment or dye. I was also educated, because I never knew what the numbers mean (10, 20, 30, or 40) indicate the developer's strength, which is related to the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. I only dye my hair black, but my housemate uses light brown. They would always ask me why my hair doesn't fade like theirs. Most over-the-counter, home dye kits use 20, I found that by using level-30, it opens the hair follicle more and deposits more dye color. Higher volume developers opens the hair more effectively, but also increase the risk of damage. Lower volume developers are gentler, ideal for subtle color changes or toning. For me, I don't worry about damage as I keep my hair very short. I cut and dye once a week with no no notable damage. My roomie is the same, and they noticed that by using a level-30 developer he notices less fading from week to week.
