So is this mouse pad a more ruff texture or a soft and smooth texture?

The control is more rough kind of like cross stitched texture but it is still very comfortable. Very smooth precise movements. The speed is a soft almost silky smooth texture. So comfy. Excellent for fast movement while maintaining precision.I own both. I got the 36in control because I just wanted a long mousepad and it was cheap but honestly Dechanic impressed me so much I bought a 12in speed also.My previous mousepad was the Razer Goliathus? speed and Dechanic blows it out the water. Best mousepads ever I will always use Dechanics as long as they make them.

Is there a water resistant coating?

The bottom is rubber ------of the one that I bought,  the top was like a wet-suit for a diver.  I hated it the only way to make it look clean was to continuously give this mat a deep cleaning in the kitchen sink to wash all the dust or any other thing out of it a spray cleaner made it worst.  Then it was waiting for it to dry --------I just got rid of it & bought a nice one ,  much more expensive than this mat.  The one I replaced it with is night & day Difference as far as cleaning & maintaining it.  In fact one year later I haven't had to clean it once other than a quick dusting. Is this pad hard?  I purchased a wooden desk for my son and I'm looking for something nice that will not only pad the desk but allow him to write too.

No, this is not hard. It's firm, but has some give to it so it's nice for me at my desk because it's comfortable for my arms to rest on. If he's using a notebook or pad of paper it should be fine, but if it's just a sheet of paper it wouldn't be ideal.
