The base oil is the carrier oil. In this product it is coconut oil. This dilutes the Patchouli oil a little, so it is not as overpowering, which can sometimes irritate the skin. After ordering this, I had ordered truly 100% Patchouli, and bought Jojoba oil to use as the carrier, only because I prefer my Patchouli a little stronger. I hope this helps.
